Flashback: Microsoft Speaks on Gamesave Tampering

mnelson.jpg

Some readers of Xbox Cheater Watch have questioned whether gamesave tampering, or gamesaving actually violates the Xbox Live Terms of Use. But back on October 30, 2007, Microsoft’s Major Nelson posted what is now known as the prelude to the big cheater shakedown. Major Nelson set the record straight and gave everyone a head’s up about gamesave tampering. Here’s an excerpt:

I have mentioned this a couple of times on my podcasts, but I want to make sure those that don’t listen to the show get the message. Specifically, don’t share your account information. If you run into that person in Halo 3 who claims if they could have your LIVE ID name and password to recover your Xbox LIVE account to their Xbox and they’ll rank you up or find you all the hidden skulls in Halo 3, I urge you not to fall to temptation. While it may be appealing, in addition to violating the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use it can also result in you permanently losing your account. If that ‘friend’ of yours decides not return your account and buys a bunch of Arcade titles and movies on your account, there is nothing we can do except cancel the account since you willingly shared your information.

  1. OK mods so you show me once where it says anything about gamesaves in that little article you posted-That article discusses one thing-account trading which is in violation of t.o.s-sharing personal information.

Moderator Comment: Direct quote from Major Nelson: “While I am on the subject of things you should not do, I strongly urge you not to tamper with your Gamerscore and Achievements. If you decide to employ some nefarious techniques to artificially increase your Gamerscore or obtain achievements by manipulating the Xbox software without playing the game, bad things will happen.” Sounds fairly clear to us.

  2. @Mod – Not clear at all – Can you please point out the reference to gamesaving please and not just random lines that you assume are aimed at gamesavers.

Where does he say “Gamesave Tampering”?
I thought he said “tamper with your Gamerscore and Achievements”
So you took it upon yourselfs to assume what he ment?

A question for you, what is Gamesave Tampering anyway?

I would assume it is someone tranferring a save from there 360 to there PC, opening up the save and actually tampering with it – no?

If so, what kind of tampering?

If i am correct then Gamesavers are not being targeted by Major Nelsons message here.
I know that a few gamesaving communities exist but i do not know of any game tampering communites.

Think you need to be a bit more clear on this before just throwing things out there

Moderator Comment: Would you bet your Gamerscore on your understanding of Major Nelson’s warning?

  3. Of course not – im just stating that it could be clearer!
